Breed: Blue Great Dane
Age (at the time of photo session): 10 years
Story on card: Big was just recently adopted at age ten through Animals 1st, a wonderful non-profit horse and Great Dane rescue group, based in Texas. Big’s new Mom found him on PetFinders.com by searching for “extra large seniors.”Big believes all doors should be open, and noses them widely open when walking past. His parents were gone during a recent thunderstorm, and the doors to all of his hiding places were shut. One hour, and two mangled, brass doorknobs later, Big was found hiding in a closet, waiting for help. Big loves to play pack horse and help with household chores. He patiently waits as up to ten bath towels are stacked on his back and then he safely hauls them to the laundry room. He is also the official “policeman” for a houseful of Golden Retrievers. Mr. Big likes to bark as if to say “Settle down you wild things!” to the younger dogs as they play.

Story: Alobar loves being a spectacle and knows how to “put on the dog.” When he walks by an outdoor restaurant his head perks up and he starts to prance like a horse on parade. But when the crowd is out of sight, he slouches back down, until his next audience appears. Like all Great Dane owners, Alobar’s family is all too familiar with comments like: “Horses aren’t allowed in the park! Where’s the saddle? What do you feed him?”He knows he’s big. He’ll use his body to block the TV you’re watching, or his paws to block the page you’re reading to let you know that he desperately needs affection. But just like Scooby Doo, this large, muscular canine is afraid of everything. When an eight-pound miniature pincher playfully growled at him, a shaking Alobar ran for the nearest lap he could jump into!
